That’s an interesting question. My view is that technology is evolving (mostly for the better) all the time- take cars for example, they are getting more environmentally friendly and more efficient all the time – even the high performance racing cars. The development of computers has also a been very important for most other technologies. We engineers for example can do our calculations faster with faster computers, which means we can design an build better products. On the other hand, we can’t rely on technology only; it’s the human in the loop who comes up with ideas that become innovations in technology.

With new technology there has historically seemed to be negative impacts initially as we rush to apply some new concept without fully understanding it.
I like to think that we’ve grown up as a species when it comes to technology and we cautiously look to see how we can apply new technologies.
As Olivia said, technology in Engineering can be used to do things more efficiently, safely and quickly.
Everything from better computing to new materials gives Engineers better tools for our work.

Oooh good question! I think it depends on the technology you’re talking about.
I’d rather live today than hundreds of years ago and that’s mostly due to advances in technology that have made people live long and have a better life. However, we’re also living well beyond the resources of the planet which is a result of the lifestyle technology has allowed.
Ultimately, for me, it depends on whether you think technology will help us get out of the mess it helped us get ourselves in to with things like global warming and wasting resources. What do you think?

A lot of technology has improved for the better, things are more efficient, more environmentally friendly and are often generally safer or easier to use.
However, it’s apparent when looking at graduate jobs that a large proportion of them are for companies who manufacture for solely military purposes. Technological advances here could be debated to either be seen as good or bad.
